BBQ Chicken Fried Rice this …

The secret? Chilled, day-old rice. It ensures each grain fries well, avoiding mushiness and giving that ideal texture every time.

Ingredients in BBQ Chicken Fried Rice

  • Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast: Absorbs BBQ flavors beautifully.
  • Dark Brown Sugar: Adds sweetness that balances with the BBQ sauce.
  • Smoked Paprika: Infuses smoky depth, essential for the BBQ vibe.
  • Garlic Powder: Enhances with a savory aroma.
  • Ground Cumin: Lends earthy warmth.
  • Dry Mustard: Offers a tangy kick that complements the seasoning.
  • Kosher Salt: Brings out flavors in the chicken and rice.
  • Black Pepper: Adds a touch of heat.
  • Olive Oil: Cooks everything to golden richness.
  • Cooked Rice: Ideally chilled overnight for that fluffy, non-clumpy texture.
  • Large Eggs: Add richness, scrambled directly into the rice.
  • Japanese BBQ Sauce: A sweet finish tying all flavors together.
  • Garnish with Fresh Herbs: A pop of green for a visual touch.

Let’s Make Some BBQ Chicken Fried Rice!

In just 20 minutes, transport your taste buds to a fusion of BBQ chicken and classic fried rice. This recipe is a weeknight wonder, bringing joy around our family table every time.

  1. Season Chicken: Mix dark brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cumin, dry mustard, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Toss with diced chicken breast until coated. Let it rest for 10-20 minutes as the spices meld into the meat.
  2. Sear Chicken: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned chicken in an even layer. Cook for 60-90 seconds until golden and fragrant, then flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes until tender. Set aside.
  3. Add Rice: Pour the remaining olive oil into the same skillet. Add your chilled rice, spreading it out for even cooking. A gentle sizzle signifies the perfect texture.
  4. Scramble Eggs: Push the rice to the sides, creating a well. Crack in the eggs and scramble them. As they firm up, fold them into the rice, adding richness and color.
  5. Stir in BBQ Sauce: Drizzle the Japanese BBQ sauce into the skillet. Stir everything for 30-60 seconds until the sauce caramelizes, releasing a smoky-sweet aroma.
  6. Combine and Serve: Turn off the heat and fold in the cooked chicken. Toss together, ensuring each bite is flavorful. Serve immediately while hot and enjoy.

Quick and packed with flavor, it’s sure to become a family favorite. Enjoy every bite!

Spice Up Your Technique: Mastering BBQ Chicken Fried Rice

Looking for ways to make a favorite even better? Try these tips to enhance your BBQ Chicken Fried Rice game.

  • Searing Tip: Preheat your skillet before adding chicken. This high-heat start creates a seared crust, locking in flavor and providing a slightly crispy texture.
  • Make-Ahead Tip: Got a busy day? Cook your rice the night before and chill it. Using cold, day-old rice saves time and keeps grains separate.
  • Egg Scrambling Tip: Create a well when adding eggs. This method allows you to scramble them softly before mixing, distributing richness evenly.
  • BBQ Sauce Caramelization Tip: Let the BBQ sauce caramelize slightly on the pan’s bottom, creating sticky bits that enrich the dish. A quick stir lifts these flavors into the rice.

I hope these tips bring a little extra joy to your kitchen adventures. Cooking should be fun and flavorful—never overwhelming!

Storing Leftover BBQ Chicken Fried Rice

After enjoying every bite of this smoky goodness, you might find yourself with leftovers. Cool your BBQ Chicken Fried Rice completely before transferring it to an airtight container. This prevents condensation, keeping the rice from becoming mushy. Store it in the fridge for up to three days—a quick lunch or dinner option. While tempting to freeze, the dish shines when fresh. Freezing might alter its texture, so enjoy it within a few days.

For reheating, the stovetop method works wonders. Heat a non-stick skillet over low heat and add the leftover rice. Cover it and stir occasionally. This gentle reheating keeps the rice from drying out, maintaining that BBQ-flavored perfection. Happy reheating!

Perfect Pairings for BBQ Chicken Fried Rice

With its smoky, savory flavors, BBQ Chicken Fried Rice shines on its own, but the right sides can improve this dish further.

Sides to Complement:

  • Cucumber Salad: Cool crunch contrasts the hearty rice, balancing smoky undertones with its light dressing.
  • Steamed Broccoli: Bright green and subtly bitter, it pairs beautifully with the BBQ notes, adding nutrition.
  • Garlic Bread: A crunchy exterior and buttery flavor complement the rich rice textures.

Garnishes to Enhance:

  • Scallions: Fresh slices add sharpness and color, enhancing both presentation and flavor.
  • Sesame Seeds: Lightly toasted, they bring a nutty crunch that meshes with the BBQ sauce.
  • Lime Wedges: A squeeze over your plate brightens the dish, adding a citrusy lift to every forkful.

Ready to try it out? What sides and garnishes are you excited to pair with your creation?

Questions About BBQ Chicken Fried Rice

Can I use fresh rice instead of day-old?

You can, but spread it on a tray and chill it for 20 minutes first. Fresh rice holds too much steam and clumps in the pan instead of frying, so the grains turn soft rather than separate.

What can I use instead of chicken breast?

Diced chicken thigh works and stays juicier through the high heat. Keep the same pound weight and the same spice rub — brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cumin and dry mustard — and cook it a minute longer.

Why did my chicken burn before it cooked through?

The brown sugar in the rub caramelises fast. Dice the chicken small so it cooks in the time the sugar takes to colour, and keep the pan at medium-high rather than full heat.

Can I make this ahead for meal prep?

Yes. It keeps four days in the fridge and reheats best in a hot pan with a splash of water rather than the microwave, which steams the rice soft. Add the egg fresh if you want it tender.

  • 1 teaspoon Dry Mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 3 Tablespoons (48g) Olive Oil, divided
  • 2 cups Cooked Rice, ideally chilled overnight
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons (38g) Japanese BBQ Sauce*

Method

  1. Mix the BBQ seasoning blend together and toss with the diced chicken breast. For best results, let the chicken rest at room temperature with the seasoning for 10-20 minutes before cooking.
  2. To cook the chicken fried rice, heat 1 tablespoon (16g) olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the seasoned chicken to the pan in an even layer. Cook for 60-90 seconds, allowing the chicken to brown, before flipping and cooking an additional 2-3 minutes to fully cook the chicken. Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate or bowl and set aside.
  3. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons (32g) olive oil to the skillet and carefully add the cooked rice.
  4. Create a well in the center of the rice and add the eggs. Scramble in the center of the pan before breaking apart and mixing into the rice.
  5. Add the BBQ sauce and stir everything together, cooking for an additional 30-60 seconds until the sauce begins to caramelize on the bottom of the pan.
  6. Turn off the heat and add the chicken back to the pan. Toss everything together and serve immediately.
